Military strategists are in demand across all sectors (for profit, non-profit, and public sectors). This fact was demonstrated as the U.S. Department of Defense recently had to temporarily suspend its "Hiring our Heroes" program due to excessive demand. These seasoned strategy professionals are attractive for their strategy experience, maturity, dependability, work ethic, and their ability to deal with adversity. Many retiring or separating service members will try to claim experience in strategy, strategy management, or strategic planning. How can you, as a potential employer, decipher the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience of prospective military candidates for your strategy, planning, and management positions? This session will explain the various career paths, schools, and assignments where military service members are selected, educated, and employed as strategy professionals. It will describe some of the core competencies and how they align with the IASP core competencies and non-military sectors. It will also provide insight into how to identify and integrate military strategists into your organization and identify specific professional development opportunities you may want to provide to maximize your use of this talent pool. The session will be largely US focused but will discuss other militaries. Finally, I will discuss some of the new tools that the military is using to develop institutional, operational, and applied strategy and some vignettes about the challenges faced by military strategists.
