The Potato Association of America in Portland, Oregon USA in 2024
On behalf of our Local Host Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to invite all Potato Association of America members, potato researchers, and industry partners to the Association’s annual meeting scheduled from July 21st to 25th, 2024 in Portland, Oregon.
The Pacific Northwest is the center of US potato production, and Oregon ranks 4th in potato production. In 2023, the potato was named the Oregon State Vegetable and Oregon potatoes are sold into all existing potato markets. Oregon is an active contributor to the Tri-State breeding program, a collaborative breeding effort that includes researchers from Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, which benefits the entire US potato industry.
The 2024 Annual Meeting is a not-to-be-missed event featuring talks related to best practices in potato breeding, production, integrated pest management, nutrient management, post-harvest physiology, and extension and outreach efforts.
Portland Oregon sits at the head of the Willamette Valley and at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, within close range of Oregon’s 350 miles of undeveloped Pacific coastline. The volcanic Cascade Mountains separate the western valleys from the quiet beauty of Oregon’s high desert region; the high desert is a stark contrast to the lush vegetation on the wetter West Side.
The peaks of Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens are visible from downtown Portland. Further south on the easterly side of the Cascade Mountains, the impressive Mount Jefferson, Mount Washington, Three Sisters, and Three-Fingered Jack can be seen.
Just up the Columbia River from Portland, Hood River is home to an active windsurfing community. Views of the basaltic flows shape the magnificent Columbia Gorge, a record of the geologic history that shaped the region.
If the urban scene is more to your taste, northwest Portland’s very walkable Pearl District overflows with restaurants, clubs, micro-breweries, public art and other cultural attractions. And Oregon’s no-sales-tax policy makes it an ideal destination for the shopper.
We look forward to welcoming the PAA membership back to Oregon for the first time since 2009. We are excited to showcase the advances made in sustainable potato production in recent years and show you warm Pacific Northwest hospitality.
