Housing matters. Where you live…matters. In fact, according to the National Fair Housing Alliance, it impacts community members' education, transportation, healthy food availability, healthcare, access to credit, living wage jobs, healthy environments, and wealth. In order to successfully change the housing status quo, community members of all organizations and societal groups need to know how to effectively advocate for, communicate to, and educate others on their rights under the Fair Housing Act. This session is designed to intentionally empower its attendees to be effective change agents beginning from the very foundation of all of our communal living because it begins with where we live. To transform and to be the very spark of transformation must begin at the beginning. Given the entrenchment of the various isms of our society that continue to undermine our ability to build Michigan communities, this session will explore specific tools provided by the Fair Housing Act and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights that can lead to housing justice.
