Name
Building a Community of Readers: From Million Words Club to Battle of the Books
Description

Creating a thriving community of readers does not happen by chance - it happens through intentional practices, shared goals, and a belief that literacy comes first. In this breakout session, I will share my journey of placing reading at the heart of classroom instruction and school culture. Participants will learn how initiatives such as launching a Million Words Club, helping to establish a multi-school Battle of the Books, and consistently prioritizing literacy transformed student engagement, motivation, and achievement. This session will highlight both big-picture initiatives and simple, everyday practices that can be implemented immediately in any classroom. Attendees will leave with practical strategies to foster a love of reading, build momentum across classrooms and schools, and create an environment where students see themselves as readers.
