Session Overview:
"Middle School Math: Strategies for Engagement" is designed to equip educators with innovative, research-based strategies to engage middle school students in math. Middle school can be a pivotal time in students' academic journeys, and this session focuses on approaches that promote active learning, critical thinking, and a growth mindset. By exploring hands-on activities, technology integration, and real-world problem-solving, participants will gain practical tools to make math relevant and exciting for students. This PD aims to help teachers create a math classroom where students are motivated to participate, take risks, and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

Session Agenda:

  • Engagement and Its Role in Middle School Math: A brief presentation on how student engagement affects learning outcomes. Teachers will reflect on their classroom experiences and discuss strategies they’ve used to keep students engaged.
  • Student-Centered Math Instruction: Introduction to problem-based learning, collaborative activities, and hands-on tasks that actively involve students in their learning. Educators will explore examples of student-driven math lessons and how to apply them.
  • Real-World Math Applications: Exploration of strategies to connect math concepts to real-world scenarios. Educators will brainstorm ways to design relevant and meaningful math problems that relate to students' everyday lives.
  • Reflection and Action Planning: Participants will reflect on the strategies discussed and create a personalized plan for implementing them in their classrooms. Teachers will share their plans with peers for feedback and suggestions.
  • Wrap-Up and Q&A: Final thoughts and a summary of key takeaways. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss how they can immediately apply these strategies to their teaching.
