Friday, January 28, 2022
9:00 AM - 9:45 AM

Description

In the southern corner of Louis Armstrong Park is Congo Square, an open space where slaves and free blacks gathered throughout the 19th century for meetings, open markets, and the African dance and drumming celebrations that played a substantial role in the development of jazz. In this session teachers will be immersed into the rich history of Congo Square in New Orleans, Louisiana. We will utilize the book Freedom in Congo Square by Carole Boston Weatherford to discover the origins and meaning of this historic landmark. Through the Orff process we will create a musical experience to honor the legacy and spirit of Congo Square.
