Description
The purpose of this session is to help band directors who either don't have a jazz band or have limited experience in jazz music develop and form jazz ensembles within the context of the traditional concert band setting by exploring and applying key elements of New Orleans Jazz.

Learning Objective 1
Describe the development of New Orleans Jazz and some of the artists associated with it; identify and define key elements of jazz: swing, blues, and improvisation
Learning Objective 2
Understand how the traditional wind band is related to the jazz band, specifically its contribution to the earliest jazz in New Orleans.
Learning Objective 3
Define and apply musical terms such as accent, "big four", riff, call and response, collective improvisation through performance of New Orleans standards: "Second Line" (Joe Avery's Blues) and Sugar Plum
