Research to Practice: Gender Bias in Music Teaching

This session will explore the presenter’s research on issues of gender bias in music education, specifically in relation to conducting and band directing. The presenter will share findings of five recent research studies: 1) Male and Female Photographic Representation in Music Educators Journal; 2) A Comparison of Virginia Band Performance Assessments in Relation to Director Gender; 3) Relationships Between Band Festival Ratings, Director Gender, and Other Selected Factors; 4) Before and After: Experiences of a Transgender Band Director; and 5) Female Band Directors’ Experiences With Gender-based Microaggressions (in progress). Implications and suggestions for music teachers and music teacher educators will be discussed.
