Andrew Schafer is in his second year of teaching and second year as Director of Choirs at Traverse City East Middle School where he teaches 6th-8th grade choir, 6th grade general music and directs the East Middle School Chamber Choir. In addition to his teaching duties at East Middle School, Andrew conducts the Traverse City Central High School Men of Note and assists with the annual school musical.


In the past 15 months under Andrew’s leadership, the East Middle School choir program has grown from 95 total students to over 180, including growing his Tenor/Bass choir from 10 boys to almost 40. He is passionate about creating positive and meaningful relationships with students and making choir as engaging and relevant as possible. He is very grateful to be teaching in Traverse City and to have a phenomenal group of colleagues, including Tami Williams, his mentor and frequent collaborator.


Andrew holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance where he sang with the University of Michigan Chamber Choir and Men’s Glee Club. He performed twice as a part of the MMC Choral Hour while a student at Northville High School, attended each year as a college student and is now excited to be back as a full-time teacher and interest session presenter.
