Stable, affordable housing is fundamental to success and economic mobility for anyone, including those impacted by the carceral system. The affordable housing crisis combined with stigma associated with a criminal record makes obtaining housing one of the biggest barriers justice-impacted Michiganders face. This session will provide an overview of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s (LEO) innovative Housing Access for Justice-Involved Individuals (HAJII) pilot program, with the goal of educating participants on potential solutions to overcome housing barriers. Presenters will discuss how two organizations use a trauma-informed and community coordinated approach to ensure equitable access to housing specifically for justice-impacted individuals, while also leveraging innovative approaches through LEO’s HAJII Pilot. The session will also provide an overview of how this pilot is being evaluated.
