Description

Millions of Michigan families experience financial stress due to factors such as unexpected events or emergencies that create a struggle to get from one paycheck to the next. Covid-19 has made financial stability even harder to achieve. For many families who may only need a couple of hundred dollars to get through an emergency, a payday loan may seem like a viable option. Yet unreasonable repayment terms and high annual percentage rates (390% APR) only worsen a borrower’s situation. Housing counseling and financial coaching practitioners are welcome to join Sue from Habitat Michigan to learn about their small dollar loan program that is designed to provide an alternative to payday loans. HFHM wishes to see this program replicated statewide, and attendees are offered the design concepts, financial proforma and details of our experience providing small dollar loans that are paired with financial education and coaching.
