Burney Johnson

I am a highly experienced senior level executive working in the affordable housing industry. Currently I am a deputy director with the State of Michigan Housing Authority, a quasi - governmental housing agency responsible for addressing affordable housing needs through various financing products and related services including asset management and choice vouchers.

I oversee our office in Detroit and a part of those responsibilities include building executive relationships inside the organizations of key partners such as local and regional governments, Community Development Financial Institutions; philanthropy, non-profit organizations and other related groups.

Before joining MSHDA, I was the Planning Director for the city of Detroit. Previous positions were also in the public sector and include Community Development Manager in Washtenaw County and Development Controls Manager in Oakland CA.

I have a strong love of cities and a unique blend of knowledge, skills and experience which helps my approach to defining and resolving pressing issues affecting urban revitalization and community development. Convening and learning from different collaborations across private, non-profit and public sectors form an important ingredient in shaping my perspective and approach on solving community issues.

I have a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from Wayne State University and a BA from Fisk University. I am a certified planner and member of AICP.

I am always interested in connecting with colleagues, managers and old friends so feel free to contact me if you would like to connect.
