Grace A.M. Smith, is an architect specializing in historic preservation. With 40 years of experience in the construction industry, Grace manages her own business as an independent historic preservation consultant. She offers an expertise in historic preservation, architecture, city planning and interior design. In addition, she provides practical historic preservation consulting throughout the state with a large variety of clients, including universities and public schools, private developers, municipalities and architects. She has worked successfully with the SHPO and the NPS on Historic Preservation Tax Credit applications, National Register Nominations, and Section 106 Applications. Four of her projects have won the Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation and five have won awards from MHPN.
Grace is also the mother of a cognitively impaired adult child. She is a co-founder of Oasis Community of West Michigan, a non-profit group who seeks affordable housing for disabled community members. Her experience as an architect gives her the experience to understand codes and laws, but her first-hand experience with disabled community members gives her the knowledge necessary to seek accommodations beyond the barrier free codes and laws.
