With the goal of fostering inclusive experiences for Muslim students and their families in music classes across Michigan, this session interweaves active learning of traditional children’s songs, demonstration of performance practices, key phrases in Arabic, and discussion. I’ll outline the hallmarks of culturally sustaining practice, talk about how the word “halal” applies to music, and suggest ideas for communicating with families about the content, scope, and goals of elementary music.
