Join Grand Rapids attorney, educator, activist, and author Christine Yared, and Lisa Furman, Dean at the University of Olivet, former public school music educator and past-president of the Michigan Music Education Association, for this interactive session.
Learn about current laws and legislation relating to LGBTQ+ issues in education and how to be an advocate for students and colleagues. This will include the federal Equal Access Act, 2023 amendments to the Michigan Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, freedom of speech, freedom of association, and their intersection with religious rights. The presentation will address issues such as symbols, clubs, curricula, names, pronouns, and books.
