Jazz vs. Classical Saxophone: Equipment, Technique, & Pedagogy
Friday, January 24, 2025
8:00 AM - 8:45 AM
Description
This session will demonstrate and discuss the differences between jazz and classical saxophone in performance and pedagogy. First, we will explore how equipment (reeds, mouthpieces, horns, etc.) affects tone and what kind of equipment is appropriate to each style. Then, we will talk about exercises that help with the development of appropriate tone, technique, and style in each idiom, and how these exercises can be complementary and mutually beneficial to students who want to learn to play both. Finally, we will discuss how to teach students according to their own goals, strengths, and interests, and help them succeed in our ensembles and their own pursuits.
