Expanding Your Choir’s Tone Color Palette Through Listening, Vocal Pedagogy, and Conducting Gesture

Friday, January 24, 2025
8:00 AM - 8:45 AM

Description
Around the world, choirs sing with a variety of vocal tones, many of which are quite different from the traditional bel canto style often heard in U.S. concerts and festivals today. In this session, we will contemplate the importance of vocal exploration in choirs, particularly with certain repertoire, and share various resources and strategies that will support such endeavors. Music teachers will leave this session with a collection of playlists that they can listen to in order to better grasp various vernacular-based and brighter tone qualities and a list of secondary choral repertoire in which varied tones can be respectfully implemented. Based on our personal experiences teaching and learning choral music around the world, we will also address healthy vocal technique and conducting strategies, which when put into practice, can quickly set students up for success in learning and performance.
