Seeing Our Students: Creating a Positive Learning Environment in the Instrumental Music Classroom

Friday, January 24, 2025
2:00 PM - 2:45 PM

Description
“When I see that they are in band, I don’t worry about them anymore. I think to myself, ‘Thank God. Someone is going to see them. Most of these kids go through their entire school day and not a single teacher sees them.’” This comment was given to me (Doris) by a 9th Grade Language Arts teacher, and was a powerful reminder that much of what we offer in our music classrooms extends far beyond the notes on the page, that our students are much more than “clarinet 2” or “trumpet 1.” But how do we “see” our individual students in meaningful ways in large classrooms with endless tasks to get done? This session will examine strategies for seeing and hearing our instrumental music students in the ensemble setting.
