Learning, Respecting, and Teaching World Music in the Instrumental Classroom

Saturday, January 25, 2025
10:00 AM - 10:45 AM

Description
While instrumental music educators are often open to teaching world music, many are unsure about how to accomplish this task due to lack of knowledge, instrumentation concerns, incongruent tuning systems, and pedagogical differences. In this session, I will provide practical ways to educate ourselves about unfamiliar cultures and to honor authenticity. Of focus will also be pedagogical strategies for teaching world music in the instrumental music classroom. More specifically, I will share lessons I have implemented in my own instrumental music classes, inspired by my studies overseas in Africa and the Caribbean. Ultimately, student interactions with varied musical cultures in band can expand their musical capabilities, broaden appreciation for what our vast musical world has to offer, and bring forth new and meaningful aesthetic experiences.
