How to Guide the Physical Adjustments of Upper String Players During Middle School Body Growth
Saturday, January 25, 2025
3:00 PM - 3:45 PM
Description
The middle school body experiences rapid growth and significant physical changes during puberty. There are some obvious and not so obvious physical adjustments in string instrument playing technique that enable students to successfully transition into their adult bodies. Physical adjustments are dependent on specific body features like longer arms, wider arms, or changes in the bone structures and musculature around the shoulders. Learn how to identify specific physical indicators of the playing technique of a middle school student that requires small adjustments to adapt to their body development.
When one or more physical indicators are identified, specific instructional language and modeling can enable more rapid technique adjustment. This session provides specific instructional language and modeling examples for teachers guiding their students’ technique adjustment during middle school body growth and development. Foundational knowledge and principles about how to coach students with highly specific feedback for fine and gross motor technique adjustments will also be presented in this session.

Learning Objective 1
Learners can visually identify physical body indicators that a middle school upper string player has outgrown previous body position and technique and requires adjustment.
Learning Objective 2
Learners can describe how a middle school student can modify their developing body to an optimal upper string position for their current body and know the implications for their adult body.
Learning Objective 3
Learners can model how a middle school student can modify their developing body to an optimal upper string position for their current body and adult body.
