Gender Expansion in Voice-Specific Choral Ensembles
Friday, January 24, 2025
9:00 AM - 9:45 AM
Description
Over the last decade, many choral directors have worked diligently to address the role of gender in voice-specific ensembles (ones that cater specifically to soprano/alto or tenor/bass voices). While there are a number of benefits of these "single-gender" ensembles, there are also drawback and issues to consider as directors of these groups.
In this session, we will discuss the role of gender in voice-specific ensembles, with attention to gender-expansive singers and their cisgender peers. For many singers, participation in voice-specific ensembles can be an important part of their gender expression, but this can also be a challenging place for transgender and cisgender singers who experience their gender identity in very individual ways.
Attendees will develop a common vocabulary for gender in choral spaces, discuss best practices for opening voice-specific ensembles to singers with a wide range of gender expression, and hear from current collegiate ensemble members who will reflect on their prior experiences and offer tips for success at various levels.
