Programming with Equity

Friday, January 24, 2025
10:00 AM - 10:45 AM

Description

This session will focus on diversifying your music program through the inclusion of works by underrepresented composers. We will explore (and actually listen to) a rich selection of music by African American, female, and other underrepresented communities, spanning from elementary to advanced high school/collegiate levels for bands and orchestras. Directors will discover compelling compositions that resonate with students and audiences alike, and leave with a repertoire of pieces ready to be purchased and programmed for your next concert. We will spotlight top composers in the field, shedding light on their unique contributions to the musical landscape. Additionally, we will discuss how directors can connect directly with these composers and help their students engage with them directly as they prepare to perform their works. Attendees will also gain insights into the importance of programming music by underrepresented composers, even in settings where student populations may not be particularly diverse. We will discuss how this approach not only enriches musical education but also fosters a more inclusive and culturally aware learning environment while not sacrificing the quality of the ensemble in any way.
