Teaching Ensemble Musicianship: Translating passion into inspired skills

Saturday, January 24, 2026
8:00 AM - 8:45 AM

Description
Musicality is often discussed as an innate quality—either you have it, or you don't. However, playing musically with shape, style, contrast, and emotional connection is accessible to all when given successful tools. This session explores strategies for translating “passion” into inspired instrumental ensemble skills. The GVSU ASTA Student Chapter will serve as the laboratory ensemble, providing demonstrations using middle and high school orchestra repertoire. Walk away with actionable strategies to advance and inspire students to reach new musical heights!
