From Slow to Go: Building Instrumental Speed
Friday, January 23, 2026
4:00 PM - 4:45 PM
Description
Building speed on an instrument is often misunderstood as simply playing faster. However, true speed arises from controlled, deliberate practice rooted in rhythmic clarity and consistent pulse. This session offers a systematic approach to increasing technical velocity on any instrument using rhythmic variation exercises and strategic metronome use. Attendees will explore practical techniques applicable across skill levels and instrumental families, enabling educators to guide students in developing both precision and speed without sacrificing musicality.

Speakers
Matheus Garcia Souza
Learning Objective 1
Participants will identify and apply rhythmic variation strategies (e.g., dotted rhythms, reverse dotted rhythms, groupings) to isolate and strengthen technical challenges in instrumental passages.
Learning Objective 2
Participants will learn how to structure metronome-based practice routines that incorporate tempo mapping, gradual acceleration, and pulse subdivision to support consistent progress.
Learning Objective 3
Participants will be equipped to design individualized speed-building exercises tailored to specific repertoire and student needs, fostering sustainable technical development.
Session Level
Middle School/Junior High, High School, Collegiate
