Non-Western Music in the Classroom: Three levels of implementation for All Music Classrooms
Friday, January 23, 2026
1:00 PM - 1:45 PM
Description
Often, the go-to strategy for meeting standards for involving music from various cultures is to sing a song in a foreign language and/or from a different culture. This, what I refer to as “First Level” Integration, is a great starting point, but there is much room for further enrichment and student engagement, which I will break down into three levels, or options that teachers can walk away with to help them find unique and interesting ways to include non-western pedagogy in their teaching.
In this session, I will share my concepts and ideas to include non-western material and pedagogy will be explained and demonstrated using examples of student performing groups, as well as interactive experiences for the audience to more deeply experience the ways our content can be enriched. One of the featured performing groups will be the Star International Academy Folk Music class, performing on the Embaire Xylophone from the Busoga region of Uganda. This instrument is one of only a few found in the United States, played by over six players simultaneously, and will be used as a showcase ensemble for the ideas described
