Friday, January 23, 2026
3:00 PM - 3:45 PM
Description
This presentation will demonstrate the need for student-centered, culturally responsive approaches in music education and offer modern band as an inspiring, evidence-based solution. Drawing from qualitative research, the session explores how incorporating student-selected popular music in modern band-style classes fosters engagement, connection, and a sense of belonging among middle school students. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and growing concerns around adolescent disengagement and mental health, traditional music programs are struggling to maintain relevance. However, a culturally responsive, student-driven approach has shown promising results in revitalizing participation and enthusiasm. Attendees will leave with practical strategies, classroom examples, and a deeper understanding of how modern band can serve as a powerful tool to re-engage students and make music education more inclusive and meaningful.
