Creating Servant Leaders in Your Student Leadership Team
Saturday, January 24, 2026
10:00 AM - 10:45 AM
Description
Leadership is among the most powerful forces in the world. Strong leaders elicit the best from others, and they provide clarity, encouragement, and hope. In addition, they set the standards for everyone else to meet. Student leaders provide an essential form of leadership that can do all of this and more when given the tools and formation they need to succeed.
Student leaders are the conduit between the directors and the rest of the ensemble. Their influence on the program is palpable. But often a strong leadership team is the missing piece in becoming a sustained program of excellence. Moreover, the student leader dynamic is challenging since it involves leading one’s peers. The best way to approach this is through the heart of a servant leader. Student leaders should see themselves serving as primus inter pares (first among equals). Primarily this means being the best example of the standards, attitude, and work ethic established in the program. In addition, they should approach their leadership as coaching and mentoring others as opposed to being in charge.
Student leaders are the guardians of the culture. The directors set the expectations, but student leaders live them for everyone else to see. The expectations and standards of a culture are strongest when they are governed from inside the ensemble by the leaders. Nothing is more powerful than this. It is the result of a strong leadership team and commitment to servant leadership.
Many directors feel as though they lack the time or expertise to invest in their student leaders to the degree that they desire. This clinic is designed to give directors the tools and strategies needed to select and develop servant leaders across their student leadership team.
The session will flow in 2 parts:

Questions in the presentation will prompt self-reflection and the handout will provide space for participants to articulate their thoughts. The presenter will articulate ways to cultivate the heart of a servant leader and provide strategies that attendees can use to develop their student leadership program. In addition to servant leadership, the presenter will provide strategies that can be employed to help student leaders thrive as culture builders and in conflict resolution through the heart of a servant leader. Moreover, the student leadership selection process will be examined and numerous strategies and concepts will be offered.
