Writing Lesson Objectives with S.M.A.R.T. Goals: A Guide for New Teachers
Saturday, January 24, 2026
11:00 AM - 11:45 AM
Description
Writing objectives is sometimes challenging for new and pre-service teachers. They are often too broad in scope or lack details necessarily to determine if students have met the goal. In 1981, George T. Doran published a paper entitled, "There's a S.M.A.R.T. Way to Write Management Goals and Objectives." Since then, teachers have used his corporate framework to create objectives in their classrooms that clearly outline what students will be learning and how. Using S.M.A.R.T. goals has not only helped teachers maintain the focus of a lesson, it has also aided instructors in assessing student learning once the material is taught. In this session, we will explore the five components of Doran's S.M.A.R.T. goals, create objectives for our classrooms, and develop assessments that relate to those objectives. Participants can expect to be engaged in individual and group exercises that strengthen their understanding of writing objectives and will leave feeling more prepared to plan focused lessons for their students.
