Response of Colorado Russet Potato Cultivar ‘AC05039-2RU’ to Nitrogen Fertilizer Application Rate

Nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates are an important factor influencing yield and quality of potato cultivars. This research was designed to evaluate the impact of N fertilizer rates on tuber yield and quality characteristics of Colorado Advanced Potato selection ‘AC05039-2RU’. The experimental layout was a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 5 levels of urea ammonium nitrate fertilizer application (0, 67, 134, 201, and 268 kg N ha -1) and 4 replications per treatment, during the 2017 and 2018 potato growing seasons at the San Luis Valley Research Center, Colorado. Tuber bulking, total tuber yield, tuber size distribution, vegetative growth, and tuber quality of AC05039-2RU were evaluated. A significant increase in total and marketable tuber yields was observed, with increasing N rate applied. Highest tuber yield was obtained at the 268 kg N ha-1 rate. Leaf area index increased with increasing N rate. Increasing N rate to 268 kg N ha-1 resulted in a significant increase in tuber bulking and petiole nitrate N concentration during mid to late tuber bulking. Tuber specific gravity decreased with increasing N rate. No external or internal tuber defects were observed under any of the N fertilizer applications rates. This study clearly shows that for early tuber bulking and to obtain maximum tuber yield, advanced potato selection ‘AC05039-2RU’ should be fertilized at an N rate of 268 kg ha-1.
