The Renters Journey and the Hidden Homeless - Mapping the Lived Experience of Navigating Affordable Housing Systems and Families Living in Hotels
Description
The segmented housing support system, combined with limited resources and escalating needs, has created a crisis of housing insecurity and homelessness. Convoluted systems place the burden on those facing homelessness, exacerbating trauma and hopelessness. The impacts are higher for historically marginalized populations. Many families with nowhere to go are living in extended stay motels. Our grassroots work helping people navigate local systems and resources has allowed us to see the lived experience of those seeking help. In this session, we will share data about the “hidden homeless” living in local motels to understand their stories, experiences trying to find affordable housing, and their most critical needs. We will review the stages and steps across the renters journey. Sharing case studies, we will highlight systemic barriers and potential solutions to create a more humane, respectful affordable housing system for all.
