There are new resources available to help municipal leaders expand local housing supply while maintaining community character. Both the Michigan Municipal League (MML) and the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) recently developed and released products that, among other things, promote infill housing. MML's Pattern Book for 21st Century Michigan and MAP's Zoning Reform Toolkit for Housing Supply and Choice advance compatible approaches that help Michigan communities allow gentle density and enable the kinds of organically occurring downtown-adjacent neighborhoods we already know and love. Taken together, the guidebooks inform an innovative regulatory approach that incorporates medium density housing - 2, 3 and 4 family units - into single family neighborhoods and makes it easier for cities to create communities that are welcoming to all.
