Jennifer E. Cobbina-Dungy is a Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. Her primary research focuses on public response to police use of force. Her second research area focuses on prisoner reentry and the understanding of recidivism and desistance among recently released female offenders. Finally, she examines how the intersection of race, gender, and neighborhood context shape victimization risks among minority youth.

Dr. Cobbina-Dungy is the Associate editor for Crime & Delinquency and serves on the editorial board of the scholarly journals Justice Quarterly, Criminology & Public Policy, Journal of Crime & Justice, Feminist Criminology, and Sociology Compass.

Dr. Cobbina-Dungy was awarded the 2021 Albert J. Reiss Distinguished Scholarly Publication Award from the American Sociological Association Crime, Law and Deviance section, given in recognition of her book Hands Up, Don’t Shoot: Why the Protests in Ferguson and Baltimore Matter and How They Changed America. She was also the recipient of the 2020 Coramae Richey Mann, which recognizes a scholar who has made outstanding contribution of scholarship on race, crime, & justice. She has served as an expert commentator on community responses to police violence, and inequalities of race/class/gender and their relation to facets of crime and the criminal legal system, such as CBS News, CBC News, NPR, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Politico.
