Dr. Upali Nanda is Partner and Global Practice Director of Research for HKS, an international architectural firm. Additionally, she teaches HealthByDesign at University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning as an Associate Professor of Practice. She serves as the Executive Director for the non-profit Center for Advanced Design Research and Education, on the AIA National Board Knowledge Committee, AARP’s Global Council for Brain Health Equity, World Cities Council’s Urban Resilience Committee and the board of the Academy for Neuroscience in Architecture. In addition to her book on “Sensthetics” she has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, edited books, and mainstream media. A frequent keynote and invited speaker, her research has been awarded the AIA Upjohn Grant, European Healthcare Design Research Award, Journal of Interior Design Scholarship Excellence award, and multiple EDRA CORE awards. In 2015 Dr. Nanda was recognized as one of the top 10 most influential people in Healthcare Design for research, by the Healthcare Design Magazine. In 2018 she received the Architectural Record’s Women in Architecture Innovator Award. In 2021 she was featured in the book on “100 women who changed architecture” for her research on point of decision design.
