James W. Gaskin, CEO, United Way of Genesee County

James “Jamie” Gaskin has transformed the United Way of Genesee County (UWGC) since becoming CEO in 2012. With his visionary leadership, Gaskin has spearheaded a modernization of the organization's model, introducing cutting-edge business strategies and innovative approaches. Under Gaskin's guidance, the UWGC has experienced impressive growth with over 75 million dollars in revenue. This growth has provided the UWGC with the ability to immediately respond to various community crises including natural disasters, fires, and the Flint Water Crisis.

Gaskin’s achievements go far beyond financial growth to sustain the essential programming that the UWGC provides. He believes that basic needs such as healthy food, affordable, quality healthcare, clean water and safe shelter are a human right – not a luxury. Using his dedication and leadership, Gaskin advocated for getting the residents of Flint clean water and accurate information well before any state or federal declarations were made. He spent every day for months in the Emergency Operations Center, connecting government personnel to the resources and community groups needed to distribute water, filters, hygiene items, lead poisoning health information and other necessities. During the Flint Water Crisis, Gaskin's tireless work and dedication to the community resulted in over $10 million in charitable contributions, earning him accolades from government officials and residents alike.

When the COVID-19 pandemic made its way to Genesee County, Gaskin leveraged more than $2 million to provide nonprofits with the personal protective equipment, vaccine education and resources needed to keep the community safe. All the while, safely continuing the work of the UWGC without stoppages or layoffs of staff.

Gaskin's impact on the community is not limited to his role as CEO; he is actively involved in numerous organizations and initiatives throughout the region. As a board and executive committee member of the Greater Flint Health Coalition, Gaskin is dedicated to improving access to quality healthcare for all. He is also a member of the Flint Promise Zone Authority, Genesee Intermediate School District Education Foundation, the Michigan Association of United Ways’ Labor Chair, Michigan 211 board member, past president of the Flint Sunrise Rotary, a Paul Harris Fellow and sits on numerous community advisory committees.

Before joining the UWGC, Gaskin served as Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Flint, where he successfully transformed the organization from a closed and insolvent entity into one of Genesee County's most respected and successful after-school and summer programs organization. With his relentless drive and unwavering commitment to positive change, Gaskin continues to lead the UWGC towards a bright and prosperous future.
