Speaker Bio
Byna Elliott, President & CEO
Byna Elliott is a distinguished leader in the field of community reinvestment, boasting a wealth of experience and a plethora of professional accomplishments. As the Global Head of Advancing Black Pathways (ABP) for JPMorgan Chase, Elliott spearheaded a mission to bolster the economic foundation of Black communities and reduce the racial wealth gap, leading teams in both the United States and abroad.
Despite growing up in humble circumstances on Detroit’s east side with limited resources, Byna’s grandmother instilled in her a strong sense of community and compassion for those around her. Today, Byna continues to carry her grandmother’s legacy, both professionally and personally.
Under Elliott’s direction, the ABP team, comprising over 25 professionals, manages an annual budget of $33 million , which is utilized to focus on four crucial areas characterized by distinct racial and economic disparities: careers and skill-building, business growth and entrepreneurship, financial health, and wealth creation. By deploying targeted investments and developing innovative programs under the firm’s diversity, equity, and inclusion framework, the ABP team’s global efforts are producing measurable long-term financial outcomes.
Before joining JPMorgan Chase, Elliott was the Chief Enterprise Responsibility Officer at Fifth Third Bank, where she oversaw the firm’s corporate social responsibility functions, including environmental sustainability, philanthropic giving, ethical business practices, and economic responsibility. Elliott played a pivotal role in the success of the bank’s landmark $32 billion investment in underserved communities in the United States from 2015 to 2020.
Elliott previously oversaw Fifth Third’s Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) efforts as the Chief of Community Development. Under her guidance, Fifth Third Bank received an Outstanding CRA rating, a remarkable two-step upgrade from its previous “Needs to Improve” rating, owing to her effective oversight of the bank’s community development entity, which managed $2 billion in tax credit investments.
Byna’s commitment to making a difference stems from her passion for hard work and compassion for people. Having spent decades leading sustainable changes for marginalized and underserved communities, her current vision is to inspire consumers, partners, and other large corporations and organizations to follow her lead and devote time and resources to improving communities. Byna resides in Michigan with her husband, Tony, and their two adult children.
