Description

American communities are facing an affordable housing shortage, while at the same time, millions of properties sit vacant continuing to destabilize these same communities and negatively impact residents. In response, many local governments are taking on the difficult task of finding innovative ways to put these properties back into productive use by repurposing them into safe, decent, and quality affordable housing.

This work can be difficult. Acquiring properties is often the easiest part of the job. Securing funding to rehab the property is hard, and maintaining them over time is even harder. There also lies the challenge in developing affordable housing in a way that does not further destabilize a neighborhood already struggling with disinvestment and loss of homeownership.

Join this session to:

  • Hear how practitioners are repurposing VAD properties into safe, decent, and affordable housing;
  • Understand the factors that should go into a decision to reuse vacant houses for affordable housing; and
  • Understand the challenges in building a sustainable, long-term strategy for creating and maintaining single family houses as affordable housing.
