When I talk to other Affordable Housing professionals about how I got started in this industry, I try to say that I started on the ground floor, as a leasing consultant, but I always end up confessing that I started even lower than that; I started at rock bottom. In 2007, to leave an abusive situation, I lost my housing and my employment and became homeless for four months. It wasn’t until November of that year that I found stable housing again in a LIHTC property on the outskirts of Mt. Pleasant, MI.
I started my journey in Affordable Housing as a person in crisis, as an applicant for the very programs MSHDA helps fund throughout the state of Michigan, and as an example of how our perceptions and biases towards the homeless are often false.
Since then, I have worked my way up from that difficult place as a LIHTC Leasing Specialist and Assistant Manager, Public Housing Occupancy Specialist, Section 8 Property Manager and Corporate Compliance Specialist. I’ve sat in many of the chairs those working in the industry work hard to fill, and now I’m where I dreamed of being for many years - with MSHDA’s Multi-Family Compliance Division.
Today, I work hard to meet MSHDA’s vision to be a partner in providing quality affordable housing that supports thriving communities because I intimately understand how quality affordable housing is the foundation that allows people, like me, to reach their full potential.
