A Comprehensive Musicianship Approach to Instrumental Music

Instrumental music teachers have long grappled with how to teach the music and to teach about the music. But how can educators continue to prepare for performances and still construct rich curricular experiences focusing on improvisation, composition, and knowledge of musical theory and context? In this session, Dr. Ryan Shaw will give examples and concrete strategies for incorporating comprehensive musicianship across instrumental settings.

Attendees will understand the history of comprehensive musicianship and the CMP model of curriculum planning.

Attendees will learn ways to construct creative musicianship activities around pieces of repertoire under study in the ensemble.
