Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Doors Through Literature

Saturday, January 30, 2021
1:00 PM - 1:45 PM

In this session, teachers will learn how to build spaces of inclusion when choosing literature for their music rooms. As educators, it is our responsibility to create mirrors, windows, and sliding doors as a way for our students to see themselves in literature. Come ready to read, sing, and play along with books and stories told from authors and illustrators who like many of our students, are underrepresented.
Learning Objective 1
Teachers in the session will be able to encourage social and emotional learning by understanding the differences between creating mirrors, windows, sliding doors through children’s literature.
Learning Objective 2
Teachers in this session will leave with five book recommendations for the music room, written or illustrated by Black and Indigenous People/Person(s) of Color (BIPOC).
Learning Objective 3
Teachers who attend this session will leave with action steps that inspire the creation of inclusive music making and reading in their classrooms.
