*Promoting a Gender-Inclusive Environment in Elementary General Music

Think gender doesn’t matter in elementary school? Think again! Whether we realize it or not, how we think about gender has significant effects on our actions and interactions with others, which in turn affect students’ experiences in the music classroom. This session will examine issues of gender, including stereotypes in music and other negative effects, and will suggest ways elementary music teachers can build a more gender-inclusive environment so that all students have a positive experience.
Learner Outcome 1
Participants will develop greater understanding of concepts related to gender identity and gender expression and how these relate to students’ experiences in school.
Learner Outcome 2
Participants will consider gender stereotypes in music and gain strategies for actively combating these stereotypes in the elementary general music program.
Learner Outcome 3
Participants will reflect on ways in which they can promote a more gender-inclusive environment in their own classrooms and schools.
